Eletään vuotta 1940. Natsi-Saksa miehittää Norjan. Presidentti Roosevelt tarjoaa kruununprinsessa Märthalle lapsineen turvapaikan poliittisina pakolaisina, ja nämä asettuvat asumaan Valkoiseen taloon. Märthan läsnäolo Washingtonissa alkaa pian vaikuttaa presidentin käsityksiin Euroopassa käytävästä sodasta. Ystävyys muuttuu kiintymykseksi ja lopulta kaaokseksi, kun Märtha vastustaa julkisesti natsien tyranniaa. Maansa puolesta taisteleva Märtha vaarantaa avioliittonsa ja saa presidentin vakuuttumaan siitä, että Yhdysvaltojen on tuettava Norjaa. Se on ensimmäinen askel taistelussa, joka johtaa Yhdysvallat sodan osapuoleksi. Samalla Märtha onnistuu hankkimaan itselleen myös vihollisia. Tositapahtumiin perustuva Atlantic Crossing kertoo monille tuntemattomaksi jääneen tarinan norjalaisesta kruununprinsessasta, josta tuli toisen maailmansodan aikana maailmanpolitiikkaan suuresti vaikuttanut hahmo. Norjan televion tuottama draamasarja kuvaa sota-ajan traagisia tapahtumia uudesta näkökulmasta. Pääosaa kruununprinsessa Märthana esittää mm. Silta-sarjasta tuttu Sofia Helin, Yhdysvaltain presidentti Rooseveltin roolissa nähdään Kyle MacLachlan (mm. Twin Peaks) ja kruununprinssi Olavia esittää Tobias Santelmann (Exit).
